1. If chains are
used for lifting, they must be visually inspected before each use and monthly thereafter with a
documented inspection record which includes the date of inspection and
an identity of the chain that was inspected.
2. Any chain that
doesn’t pass inspection will either be repaired & load tested to the
manufacturer's specifications, or depending on the amount of wear or damage, be
discarded & replaced.
3. A designated
& qualified employee will perform the chain repairs.
4. All chains will
be given a visual inspection prior to each use. This inspection shall consist
of looking for excessive wear, defective links or welds, noticeable stretch,
and any other obvious problems.
5. If any problems
are found during the visual inspection, the employee will notify a supervisor
of the problems so an assessment can be made as to whether it is safe to use.
6. In addition to
the above, all the chains shall be kept clean and stored in a fashion so as not
to cause tangles and binding. The chain hooks or rings shall be secured to the
chain links by the approved hardware. Bolts, pins or other makeshift
attachments are not to be used. Also bolting, wiring or knotting may not
shorten chains
7. Record any items
that show signs of possible failure and are in need of maintenance. Said chain
shall be tagged and taken out of service immediately, until repairs are
completed by trained personnel.
Please Review The Following for Chains:
